Christmas Tree Adventures

Stephen and Shawna invited us to go with them into the mountains to find and cut down our own Christmas tree. I have always thought this was a rather romantic idea. I love driving in the mountains, so we thought we'd give it a shot. S & Sh drove the older kids with them (bless them, our trip was rather peaceful when Felix and Lydia fell asleep).
Zoe looks a little pained in this photo. It WAS painfully cold. But they were all bundled up.
When we got there Felix was asleep and Lydia was refusing to get out of the car. It really was cold (did I mention that?), so I stayed in the car with them. The others set out to find some trees. They had to hike up a mountain covered in snow to find one. Liam was not appropriately dressed for trudging through feet of snow. I cringe, remembering he was wearing tennis shoes and booty socks! I really didn't think they would be trudging!
After a long hike and not really finding anything, they picked the first good sized trees and headed back, trying to prevent Zoe and Liam from plummeting off the side of the mountains (I guess they were a little hyper).

After affixing the trees to the cars, we headed down to Idaho City (an old mining town) and stopped at a little ma and pa restaurant for the worst hamburger I have ever consumed. Even though it sounds like a bad trip I really did enjoy the drive, the company, and realizing that however romantic it sounds, cutting down your own Christmas tree is not a must. Don't get me wrong, Steve and Shawna, I am glad we did it! Though, I may have felt differently if I would've trudged that mountain with you guys.
As we were driving up the mountain, we kept seeing people coming down with these sorry trees. I wondered why they bothered going up to cut down an ugly tree. Turns out, they all..."have character". Ours resembled a large branch. We just laughed about it and put all of our decorations on it. The next morning it had toppled over and lay lifeless on the living room floor (having smashed many ornaments).
Didn't I say adventureS?

Too funny! We did this a couple of times growing up and had a blast. Glad you had an adventure!

you should see our tree...full of character.

Yesterday i heard that the other restaurant in Idaho City (Trudy's) is actually very delicious. AND if we go up highway 55 towards McCall the trees were all gorgeous and really easy to get at. All of this information was about two days too late.

Ha Ha Ha! I love that tree. Atleast you didn't have to go to three walmarts to find one with prelit colored lights on it. Your story is a lot more entertaining!

That is an awesome (and very entertainingly-told) story, Melissa! How nice for you to get to stay in the car!

Seth just came over to look at your blog, saw the picture of your tree and said, "THAT'S a Christmas tree? It's weird." Oh, poor deluded child...can't see a tree with Character. :0)

We did the same thing when we lived in Boise, but it was before kids (so I didn't have any excuse to stay in the car). Our tree was completely brown on one side, so we flocked it to disguise that fact. Ah, good times.

Thanks for sharing the adventureS!

P.S. Felix is so darling I want to eat him. I have a soft spot for red-headed baby boys.
