My parents use to sing a song from the musical comedy, The Fantastics. "Why did the kids put beans in their ears? No one can hear with beans in their ears? After awhile the reason appears, they did it, 'cuz we said 'No'".
Zoe has struggled a bit with reading. I really think a lot of it is laziness, and not really finding anything that she is interested in. We got a bunch of books last year and she found one she thought she would like. She read the first chapter or so and then the book got lost.
Everytime I would ask her to read she would request this book. Then we would have this discussion again,
"Zoe, you know that book is lost. I tried to find it at the library and they don't have it. Please try to find something else...etc."
"I don't like anything else. That is my favorite book. Why can't we just get it...etc."
Well, after having this conversation so many times I stumbled upon the book at the store and decided to get it for her.
After being denied this book for so long, the girl (who can always think of reasons for NOT finishing a book) read the book in a day.
"Your daughter brings a young man in, says; "Do you like him, Pa?" Just say that "he's a fool!" and then, you've got a son-in-law."

Ha! Maybe you should just start hiding every book she starts to read and then presenting it to her after she misses it enough? :) I love the son-in-law quote.
I am sure you are going to get tons of advice about what books Zoe will like but as an uninspired reader myself (embarrassing to admit but true), I thought I would offer these books as a great read for someone her age:
Goose Girl and Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
I read them both last year and have been waiting to recommend them to someone that wasn't an adult so I didn't feel stupid about having read them.
I just started reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid b/c I had to know what all the fuss was about. Hilarious! I'm probably a bad mom to let my kid read such nonsense (and to suggest that Zoe might enjoy it), but a little silly keeps us quick.
I'm glad she found a book she liked. I have the opposite problem with Caleigh who sits on the couch, and puts her finger in the air (telling me to wait) when I ask her to do something. Hilarious. I'm sure she learned the "pointer finger in the air" thing from me. Ooops.
